Patten / 1869。

Alfred Fowler Patten
Copernicus at Frauenberg
Oil on canvas
114.3 x 87.6 cm
1869

At the carnival gathering in Frauenberg, a satirical play mocking Copernicus and his theories (possibly written by Wilhelm Gnapheus) is being performed. Copernicus, dressed as a clergyman, strides fearlessly through the boisterous crowd. This work demonstrates that Copernicus’s heliocentric theory and the scientific revolution it sparked had gained widespread acceptance by the 19th century. Patten was a figure painter active in London during the 19th century. The artist’s signature and the creation date can be seen in the lower right corner of the canvas: A.F. Patten / 1869.
