　　The Almagest is Ptolemy’s most significant work—a monumental 13-volume masterpiece that synthesizes the achievements of ancient Greek astronomy, including the geocentric theory. For nearly 1,500 years, from the Roman era until the early 17th century, it remained essential reading for astronomical research. The text was once lost in Europe until Gerard of Cremona translated its Arabic version into Latin. The copy held by the Ptolemaic Museum is the first printed edition of this translation (1515), formerly owned by the historian of science and Harvard professor Owen Gingerich.
