Apollo Belvedere and Diane Chasseresse
Bronze
Apollo: 102cm; Diana: 100cm
Mid-19th century

This set of sculptures depicting Apollo and Diana is a typical example of Victorian Neoclassical works. They are modeled after a 4th-century BCE Greek piece from the Vatican Museum and a Roman-era work from the Louvre, both considered among the most iconic sculptures of ancient Greece and Rome. These pieces reflect the 19th-century British aristocracy’s passion for collecting classical art. Both inscribed: Lieut Coll. C. H. Nicholson / to C. A. Nicholson / AS HEIRLOOMS FOR BALRATH HOUSE / 21st FEB Y 1866.
